Plantation

Plantation is part of a series produced by Dara McGrath when he was commissioned by Sligo County Council for their series of public art works, Unravelling Developments 2004-2006.

This commission was funded by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government Per Cent for Art Scheme.   Emanating   from a public art commission from Sligo Co. Co., under the series title Unravelling Developments 2004-2006.

Plantation explores the actual physicality of the planning process and how it is reflected on the land. Linking social concerns of the area with a site specific installation . It achieves  this by means of a photographic documentation and mapping of land undergoing planning application around the south Sligo county region.

The documentation of these spaces reflects the true diversity of what is being mediated. From simple house extensions, pathway improvements and renovations to radical alterations of the landscape like the creation of wind farms, large housing developments and commercial activities.

Putting forth the social concerns of the wider sphere back into the public realm for re-negotiation.

One major element of Plantationís public realisation was by means of 4 large-scale billboard installations on the approach roads of Enniscrone town on the north-west coast of Ireland. Enniscrone being an example of that same major growth   especially around its periphery and the surrounding hinterland.

Installation Dates:   14th May to 14th August 2005

BOUNDARIES

Boundaries is a two week installation of photographs, distributed throughout the city of Cork, Ireland during its tenure of European City of Culture 2005 in a series of posters. The images are the culmination of a more than three-year project by Dara McGrath, the documentary photographer. McGrath, a prize-winning artist, has systematically documented the internal EU borders. Images of these border areas will stimulate the connection between site and site,   and ideas of inclusion and exclusion . Ten separate images will appear and reappear on mini-posters around the city, placed at eye-level and engaging directly with the busy urban passerby.
